‘This is the embarrassing bit where I talk in the microphone expecting it not to be on but it is.’ What a way to open a set! The small crowd laughed and prepared to watch one of the best local bands of this decade.
Jeff have come a long way from their beginnings five years ago, playing their first gigs at a LEAPS night at the Locomotive in Cambridge. After surviving line-up changes and break-up rumours, the band are currently gigging manically and gaining well-deserved recognition. Tonight explained why they are doing so well on the music scene.
It’s hard to place their sound. If anything they are a rock band, though more American than Glam. Good, tightly structured guitar-led songs with clear strong vocals give a very polished and pure sound. Each song has an underpinning melody which is returned to in the verses to give a sense of continuous recognition. The drums are spot on beat and brilliantly manipulated, lending a more professional sound to the whole group.
The thing with Jeff is that they write a song well, then let it be. And as they perform it, it becomes something else, something in itself. It sounds simple but is hardly ever done with such purity. And thus their sound develops, it become uniquely Jeff. This band deserves all the praise they get. Let’s hope they go all the way.
