The Cathedral City of Ely in Cambridgeshire, England

The Columnists

Who the hell is Karl Bedingfield?

Karl is the designer and driving force behind Ely Online's new look. He doesn't take life too seriously and maybe needs to grow up a little. Karl's life evolves around music, this stems from an early age when he discovered his fathers eclectic record collection with such artists as Mario Lanza and The Mamas & Papas.

In his teenage years he was heavily immersed in the mod revival of 1979 and was co–founder (with friend Chris Hunt) of the influential modzine 'Shadows & Reflections'. In 1985 Karl, heavily influenced by the electronic acts of the day (Heaven 17, Bronski Beat & Paul Haig) brought a drum machine & synth and embarked on a brief encounter with music creation. This resulted in a demo tape with John Glover and becoming keyboardist with Ely band 'Refugee'. Karl left the band in late '86, the band would eventually mutate into Ely legends Crossland.

He is a workaholic spending far too much time in front of the computer at the expense of his friends. He can be seen in the Prince Albert every-so-often with the his drinking buddies John & Lee, affectionally known as the 'Folk Boy Three'.

A bunch of fives! — 5 inconsequential facts about Karl!

  1. Once in a 'Goth band'!
  2. Co–founder of the fanzine 'Shadows and Reflections'!
  3. Had a song named after him — 'Karl's New Haircut'.
  4. He rides a Vespa PX200E.
  5. He was a MOD.
